The Aikido club at Swansea University was set up in 1981 with the aim of giving university students and non-students an introduction into a non-competitive Japanese martial art in a safe and supportive multi-cultural environment. Besides teaching self-defence and physical fitness, Aikido develops mind and body coordination, confidence, and interpersonal sensitivity and is equally well suited to women and men. In many cases the initial study of Aikido during student years develops into a more long-term interest, with numerous Swansea students going on to reach black belt level.
