Club History
The Aikido club at Swansea University was set up in 1981 by James Smith with the aim of giving university students an introduction into a non-competitive Japanese martial art in a safe and supportive multi-cultural environment. Besides teaching self-defense and physical fitness, Aikido develops mind and body coordination, confidence, and interpersonal sensitivity and is equally well suited to women and men. In many cases the initial study of Aikido during student years develops into a more long-term interest, with numerous Swansea students going on to reach black belt level.
The Swansea University Aikido Club chief instructor is Brian J. Smith, 5th Dan. Gradings gained are recognized world-wide, as the club is part of the British Universities Aikido Federation and affiliated to the British Aikido Federation, which in turn is a member of the Aikikai Foundation, Aikido World Headquarters, Japan.
