Why did you decide to study at Swansea University?
I was born in Swansea and I knew that the local university had a great reputation. I was working in Swansea so this helped me to study and work at the same time.
What did you enjoy most about your course at Swansea?
I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the philosophy behind the practical aspects of politics. Professor Greenleaf was superb.
What are you doing now career-wise?
I am the Member of Parliament for Ribble Valley and also Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.
How has Swansea University and your course helped you with your chosen career path?
I think the course speaks for itself. My former lecturer Barry Sheerman MP helped to introduce me to the real world of practical politics.
What are the most challenging parts of your job?
Remembering all the names of the MPs, along with closely following the debates to ensure everyone is keeping in “order”.
What are the most rewarding parts of your job?
Ensuring the debate flows, and irrespective of party or views people can get their points of view across.
What advice do you have for current students and new graduates?
Focus on growing your mind via whatever course you choose to do, but at the same time enjoy meeting new friends. I am still in contact with some friends and we see one and other from time to time.
What have you done that you are most proud of?
I have legislation on the statute book in my name.
What are your favourite memories of your university years at Swansea?
Winning the election to represent the university in Cuba at the World Youth Festival. Little did I know that on the same trip would be one Peter Mandelson, Charles Clarke and Trevor Phillips.
And finally, describe yourself in 3 words…
Never gave up...........
