Applied Social Sciences currently offers undergraduate programmes in Social Policy, Criminology and Social Work, and postgraduate programmes in Criminology and Child Welfare. We also welcome applications from students interested in pursuing research degrees - a full research studentship and a fees only bursary is available within the School in 2008/2009 (click here for further info).
Staff in the Department are active in research across a broad range of interests. Four specialist centres of excellence have been established within the Department – the International Centre for Childhood Studies, the Centre for Criminal Justice and Criminology, the Centre for Social Work and Social Carework Research and the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Ageing.
We are major contributors to British and international research in social work (particularly child welfare), in applied criminal justice and in gerontology. The quality of this research was recognized in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise by the award of a Grade 5A. We encourage all our students to take advantage of this active research involvement to enhance their own scholarship and learning.
We have strong links with agencies providing health, education and social welfare services to children as a result of our partnerships in teaching, research and consultancy. We are committed to equality of opportunity and to anti-discriminatory practice, and to the provision as far as possible of equal access for those who use Welsh as their language of preference.
We are also home to The Post Qualifying Consortium for Wales, The Welsh Consortium for Approved Social Worker Training and OPAN (Cymru) - the Older People & Ageing Research & Development Network.
Applied Social Sciences is part of the School of Human Sciences, which also includes the disciplines of Psychology, Childhood Studies and Sports Science.
