Kate Parksinson - Project Manager
Kate has over 10 years experience in project management and delivering support to small and medium sized businesses from many sectors across Wales. Kate’s work in Wales has given her first-hand experience in diverse sectors such as steel manufacturing, construction, biotechnology and environmental goods and services. She is passionate about supporting Welsh innovation and meeting the needs of business in today’s competitive, global market.

Teaching
Dan Eastwood - Lead Tutor
Dan has over 15 years experience in scientific research specialising in fungal biology and is a qualified university lecturer. He has conducted extensive research relevant to the mushroom cultivation industry and has interest in microbial wood decay and in the exploitation of microbes by the green technologies industry. Dan has detailed practical experience of a wide range of molecular biological techniques, genomic technologies and chemical analysis. Dan enjoys the challenge of science communication, he has created gold medal-winning scientific outreach exhibits at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and is looking forward to engaging with companies in Wales.

Dr Ed Pope - TutorEd has over 10 years experience as a marine biologist, frequently working at the interface between academia and industry. His research on the invertebrate immune system, specifically its application in fields such as aquaculture and antifouling, has provided him with experience in a wide range of field and laboratory techniques. He is enthusiastic about work-based learning and providing support to the Bioscience sector in Wales.

Gethin Rhys Thomas - TutorGethin has recently completed his PhD in conservation biology at Swansea University. He has several years experience as a Consultant Ecologist, designing impact assessments and mitigation strategies for developers working with endangered species. He has a broad interest in several fields, including freshwater biology, parasitology and conservation, and is also prominent in the development of Welsh-medium biosciences teaching at Swansea University. Gethin has worked extensively with the Welsh biosciences sector and is keen to transfer his skills from university teaching to the private sector in Wales.

Dr Neil Price - TutorNeil has several years experience in industry, having worked as a Senior Ecologist at an ecological consultancy and as a senior study director for a pesticide efficacy research organisation. Neil has also worked in academia and believes strongly in the concept of bringing industry and universities together through work-based learning. Neil sees the Advanced Professional Training in Biosciences project as an ideal and unique opportunity to strengthen links between academia and industry by delivering first class, innovative teaching to businesses in Wales.

Dr Liz Bond - TutorLiz has 5 years’ post doctorial experience as a biochemical mass spectrometrist and several years experience working in and with industry within the South Wales region. Liz has extensive knowledge in bioanalytical techniques as well as working within a clinical environment and GLP/GCP accredited laboratories. Liz believes in strong collaboration between industry and universities through work-based learning and is keen to further strengthen the links/collaborations between industry and academia through modern and advanced teaching and training methods.

Dr. Gabriela Juma – TutorGabriela has been involved in numerous international multidisciplinary research projects, particularly in the field of entomology, molecular and evolutionary biology. With over 15 years experience in research, Gabriela has developed wide field and laboratory based skills, including molecular techniques, microscopy, acoustic and ecotoxicology methods as well as laboratory management skills. Alongside her research, Gabriela has also enjoyed teaching and supervising students effectively. She is enthusiastic about applied science and believes that the APT Bioscience programme and work-based learning is an excellent opportunity to expand the collaboration between academia and the practical skills needed in industry today.

Dr Wendy Harris - TutorWendy has worked in the field of ecology, and believes that a strong partnership of academia and industry is essential for successful management projects. She has specialised in behavioural ecology and conservation, and has used strong links with industry to create interdisciplinary projects, as well as opportunities for practical work experience for students. Wendy is keen to transfer her experience with lecturing and supervising to support Welsh businesses with work-based learning.

Online Learning
Fran Thornton - Online Educational Manager
Fran has over 10 years experience in the field of eLearning. As a qualified Medical Artist her area of expertise is in the field of Visual Media, producing original artwork & animations, photography and the production of film clips. She has participated in all areas of the development process from the initial design phase, to development and evaluation and has been responsible for setting up and providing administration for a series of Blackboard sites. She was a key member of the team that created eWARD, a package of multimedia care scenarios for nursing, midwifery and other health care students. This package has gone on to win a number of awards including the BT Times Higher Education Award in 2000, the WELSH LANGUAGE IN HEALTH CARE AWARD (Education) in 2008 and the Royal College of Midwives Award for Excellence in Midwifery Education. Fran will be taking a lead on the development of the Virtual Learning Environment and distance learning materials.

Chris Rees - Online technologistChris has 7 years experience as a web/UI designer and developer. He has worked on a range of online projects in the education and private sector from Higher Education websites to sites for television. Chris recently joined the team having built and managed the web presence for a £7.5 million pound Assembly funded collaboration project between Swansea University, Swansea Metropolitan University and Trinity St David. His key areas of expertise are HTML, CSS, JQuery, User Interface design and accessibility. Chris will be assisting in the development of the Virtual Learning Environment and distance learning materials.
