The Economics Network of the Higher Education Academy Awards are presented annually in three categories, to recognise and reward exemplary practice from within the UK academic economics community.
Dr Latreille this year received the Student Nominated Award, which provides economics students with the opportunity to identify and honour the most inspiring and dedicated teaching staff in their department.
In this category, the judging panel looks for teachers who inspire and encourage student interest in the subject and challenge and motivate students towards academic excellence.
The award recognises lecturers who enjoy and appreciate the importance of working with students, who enhance students’ education out of the classroom, and whose enthusiasm for the subject is highly evident to his or her students.
Speaking about winning the award, Dr Latreille said: “My nomination this year came as a complete – and obviously very pleasant – surprise and I’d like to thank my students for nominating me again.
“Of course, learning and teaching are shared endeavours, which should be mutually enjoyable and stimulating, so the students take much of the credit for this by making teaching such a rewarding experience.”
Dr Latreille’s achievement is especially remarkable in that he is the only academic to have been recognised more than once in these national awards.
And he has now enjoyed success in all three categories, having won the eLearning Award last year and having received a commendation in the Outstanding Teaching category in 2003.
The award adds to the considerable reputation built by economists in Swansea for the quality of their teaching.
Last year, in addition to the eLearning Award given to Dr Latreille, lecturer Dr Duncan Watson won the Student Nominated Award, while lecturer Dr Osman Ouattara received a commendation in the same category.
Professor Steven Cook also received a commendation in the Outstanding Teaching category in 2005.
