The aim of this workshop is to enable women entering, continuing in or returning to SET to market themselves effectively using written communication. We will look at:
- Understanding personal blocks to effective written communication & overcoming areas of concern
- Combining skills & experience into an effective CV
- Exploring options for covering letters for getting your message across effectively
- Focusing on what is required when completing job applications

To enable women entering, continuing in or returning to employment in SET to plan their careers effectively and identify appropriate job opportunities. We will deal with:
Understanding concerns about entering or returning to work & identifying options to overcome them Considering motivations & priorities e.g. the returner & family, work-life balance, career portfolio. Exploring options re. flexible working, location, type of role, levels of responsibilityTiming of the training days
9:30 am Welcome, registration and tea/coffee
10:00 – 4:00 pm Course
Morning, afternoon tea/ coffee/ lunch provided.
Travel expenses provided (public transport unless completely impractical) and costs of child care (details upon enquiry).
Eligible women are:
- Final year undergraduates in SET & built environment
- Recent graduates in science, engineering, technology (SET) & built environment
- Those with SET or built environment qualifications
- Those with at least one year post-A level studying in SET/ built environment
- Qualified women who have taken a career break and wish to return to these specialist areas
- SET-qualified women working in other fields who wish to return
- Women working in SET/ built environment who want to consider how best to progress their careers
- Women who have the right to work in the UK
The Women's Workshop is funded by BIS (Dept for Business, Innovation and Skills) until 2011. It offers other free services such as: Peer Mentoring Circles, one-to-one action planning & support, travel and training bursaries.
There are services for returners and for those already working in science, engineering or technology who want to progress their careers.
The Services for Women Coordinator (Bernie Williams) is a zoology graduate (Aberdeen) with a DPhil in medical & veterinary entomology and has had a (moderately!) long career in University and contract research.
