Swansea University - English language skills

Developing your English language skills

For some international students the lack of English language ability (written and spoken) is a serious barrier to finding and getting jobs and work experience.  Unfortunately the Careers service cannot devote resources (e.g. during a Careers appointment) to help you do this as this is the responsibility of individual students.

However, there is support available elsewhere in the University.  For more information please refer to The International Students' Handbook or contact the University's English Language Training Services direct.

The most common difficulties experienced by International students include:

  • tenses - using the wrong tense or mixing tenses;
  • omitting articles - the, a, an;
  • using incorrect prepositions - at, in, on, under;
  • spelling;
  • using capital letters incorrectly;
  • using the passive voice when the active voice is required.

Remember that it only takes one letter misplaced or a word spelled incorrectly to cancel out the good things you will have put into your CV.
