studying overseas

For a good general introduction to postgraduate study overseas read Postgraduate Study and Research - available free in the Careers Centre, or look at the studying abroad section of the Graduate Prospects website at www.prospects.ac.uk.

Study overseas is quite possible, but not necessarily easy. Begin investigating at least 18 months before you want to start studying, and consider the following points:

  • language: are you fluent in a language other than English, or are you restricted to English speaking universities?
  • check how a country’s higher educational system differs from that in the UK, as there are rarely direct parallels;
  • be ready to asses the quality of state and private universities, the latter common overseas;
  • grants and awards will come from educational and charitable trusts, and are not available from UK public funds.

Braintrack University Index is a useful source of information on universities, polytechnics, colleges and other higher educational institutions worldwide. Universities Worldwide is another site offering a searchable database of links to the websites of universities around the world.

Most graduates study in the USA or in a Commonwealth country. The Careers Centre at Swansea is a regional information centre for the USA Fulbright Commission which provides an information and advisory service for people interested in studying in the USA, and the Commission supplies us with a wide range of reference books and directories. The materials available in Careers on Level 3 of the Library include directories of undergraduate and postgraduate courses together with information about sources of funding and scholarships, preparation for admissions tests, and also some information on internships.

For information about Commonwealth Universities visit the Association of Commonwealth Universities' website. Also see the Commonwealth Scholarship & Fellowship Plan website for information on awards currently being offered by member countries.
