Postgraduate Skills Development
In conjunction with the Post-Graduate Research Faculty (PGRF) the Careers Service has drawn up a set of skills sheets, based on the Research Councils' requirements which you will use to record your skills as you acquire them throughout your studies.
All students will be required to attend a lecture detailing the requirements for recording skills, and an interview with their supervisor by the end of the first year of research. You will be encouraged to think about career management. Some of you may have very clear ideas about what you want to do while others may need help in making decisions.
You will be developing research skills during the whole period of post-graduate study. Consequently this programme or recording skills will continue throughout your research period.
Workshops will be provided specifically for research post-graduates on writing CVs, filling in application forms and interview skills, so that you can present your achievements effectively and compete successfully for employment.
What you need to do in addition to your studies to achieve career success: work hard to achieve a good post-graduate qualification within the deadlines set. This demonstrates to employers that you have the ability to plan and organise your work to achieve targets, qualities that are sought by employers.
Develop additional skills.
Use your free time to follow your interests and develop your full potential in other areas of your life, e.g., membership of a club or sports team, voluntary work, etc; maybe take leadership roles such as Chair, President or Treasurer. Even with a post-graduate qualification, employers will expect you to provide evidence that you have a wide range of additional skills and experiences.
Begin to clarify your career direction from the start of your research.
Take every opportunity to find out more about the world of work, employers, organisations and careers available. Attend talks by visiting employers, arranged and advertised by the Careers Centre.
