CASE STUDY
A national learned association’s Summer School, held annually each September
Why come to Swansea?
This was the Summer School’s third visit to Swansea in 17 years. Crucial was the knowledge that the levels of service will meet their high expectations consistently over a twelve day event, incorporating three schools. The organisers appreciate the compact campus and the great coastal location, offering plenty of excursion options.
Bedroom needs
c.400 ensuite bedrooms, predominanty singles but with some twins, all in close proximity to the catering and meeting venues
Meeting rooms
Plenary room for all with three parallel session rooms for 150+ and eight seminar rooms for c50, all close together
AV
Up to date, high spec. equipment in every room plus special stage sets for plenary sessions with a need for the campus media staff to work closely with the summer school’s av coordinator.
Catering
Quick, efficient service of high quality, working to a tight schedule, with private dining each evening for speakers and committee members and special banquets for each of the three Schools, one of which needs to be in an outside venue. Venue chosen:
The National Waterfront Museum, which hosted a special banquet amongst the museum exhibits with guest speakers and local musicians.
Sports facilities
Whilst not essential, good facilities are a real plus which was certainly the case with the opportunity for early morning swimming in the Wales National Pool, sessions in the university gym and coastal jogging routes.
Travel
Good motorway access via the M4, low cost flights to Cardiff International airport and rail links to London Paddington and the rest of the UK meant an early afternoon registration was manageable for all.
