The Experimental Work of F.C.J. Spurrell: Pigments, Faience, Glass and Amulets.
Ashley Cooke (National Museums of Liverpool)
Flaxman
Spurrell (b.1842, d. 1915) was an archaeologist who worked with Petrie and
contributed specialist information to a number of his excavation reports. His
collection of provenanced material from Abydos, Amarna, Gurob, Hawara,
Hierakonpolis, Lahun and Naqada is held by National Museums Liverpool. One of
his special interests was experimenting with Egyptian pigments. The museum holds
the products of Spurrell’s experiments, such as his attempt at making Egyptian
blue. Spurrell’s interests in technology also extended to making a typology of
amulets, glass and flints for the different sites he worked at. Most of these
artefacts are not on display and this paper aims to bring the collection and
early experimenting to a wider audience.
