The Egypt Centre

The Egypt Centre houses over
200 objects from excavations at Tell el-Amarna. This day school will centre on these objects, exploring what
they can tell us about the daily life of the ordinary people and also the
luxurious lifestyle of the royal family and courtiers. There will also be a
handling, drawing and photography session where workshop participants can handle
real objects from the site and have an opportunity to draw and photograph them
(remember to bring your camera!) Coffee
and tea are provided but you will need to bring a packed lunch or buy your lunch
on campus.
10-10.15 Introductions and welcome
10.15 – 10.45: Background to Amarna (excavations at the site, brief outline of its history); Amarna and the Egypt Centre (how the objects got to us)
10.45-11.00 Coffee
11.00 – 12.15: The royal family and courtiers. This will include
: Rings and cartouches
: The eternal royal family: statuary
: Inlays, painted plaster and other royal decoration
: The jewellery of princesses? - the beaded collars
: Wine vessels and other luxury goods
12.15 – 1.15 Lunch
1.15 – 2.30: The Workers. This will include:
: Amulets and magic
: Rings and other faience artefacts
: Pottery production
: Flint
2.30 – 2.45 Coffee
2.45 – 3.30 Drawing, Handling, Photography
