This page is the template index.htm for all top level pages, i.e. those
in directories at the / level e.g. /american/, /civeng/, /Science/. It should not be used
at lower levels without modification - all images and links will be 'broken'. The information contained in this page is intended as an overview of the UWS Web style. Detailed information for Web page developers can be found in the Anatomy of a UWS Web Page. All Titles, Headings, Menu items, Toolbar and Linkbar items are GIF images which contain text at various point sizes in the Adobe Type 1 Palatino typeface. Palatino is specified as part of the University's corporate image and is available to all departments free of charge. All other text is in the default typeface at the normal default size dictated by the user in their browser's settings. Please contact the LIS Advisory Service for further information on how to obtain your Palatino typeface and licences. Detailed information on Creating Text Images is available. The photograph above can be found in the /uws/images/photos directory which also contains a number of photographs from the 1998 Undergraduate Prospectus. Adobe Photoshop is recommended for creating text GIF images and processing digitised (scanned) photographs into JPEG images. A scanner is available in the Catalogue Hall of the Library and Information Centre. Step-by-step instructions on using the scanner accompany the equipment. This table contains paragraphs of introductory text. The gutter on the LHS contains a spacer image which ensures a consistent 110 pixel wide gutter is maintained when this page is displayed in different browsers. |

This table is an example of a typical section (Section1) linked from the menu items at the top of the page. The anchor (or bookmark) which references this section is in white text in the LH gutter just above the heading. The LH gutter also contains a spacer image as described above. Note that the text in this cell is bounded top and bottom by a line break (the <br> tag). This assists the selection of the text for editing, and provides suitable vertical spacing.

The inclusion of this standard section ensures that users have a consistent way of accessing contact information for each department and is a feature of the navigation strategy throughout the site. The footer below this section is standard apart from the date (last updated) and the author/contact link in the bottom RH cell, which should be amended appropriately. If you would like further information on using this template or would like to discuss the implementation of the University's Web style please contact: Dr Robert Symberlist,
