Steels Training Research and innovations partnership - STRIP aims to address the higher level skills gaps to enable the creation of next-generation high level employees equipped with expertise in new technology essential for increasing productivity, minimising environmental impact and with the capacity to develop novel products essential for the creation of a Sustainable Steel Industry in Wales. This project could not go ahead without the generous funding received from WEFO (Welsh European Funding Office).

The scheme works closely with a number of companies in order to provide the students with a comprehensive and varied experience whist studying. The close company contact means the projects remain relevant and interesting. The skills obtained during the MRes and EngD will allow the students to quickly enter the world of work and make a genuine and valued contribution to this important sector.

10 doctorate and 8 Masters places are available to European Union students who locate to the Convergence area of Wales. The next intake will begin their studies in Oct 2011, embarking on 3 months of training in the classroom. In January, students will begin their research project which is linked to a very real industrial process or product. At the end of their course they will have a higher level qualification along with crucial experience of industry allowing them to more quickly enter into the world of work and contribute fully to the knowledge economy in Wales.
