Schemes of study
Swansea University offers a wide range of innovative and exciting full-time degree programmes leading to BEng and MEng Single Honours degrees in Aerospace Engineering.
The degrees cover the necessary aspects for a successful career in the growing aerospace industry. The comprehensive theoretical studies are complemented by industrial site visits offering the chance to work on current industrially related issues in addition to laboratory work utilising our in-house wind tunnel for aerodynamics and jet engine test stand. Practical flying experience is gained from the College’s state-of-the-art Merlin MP521X engineering flight simulator mounted on a six axis hydraulic motion system and flying experience at a local airport. Students also cover a flight test course in aircraft performance, stability and control at Cranfield's Aviation Department.
The aim is to endow graduates with the ability to understand, evaluate and interpret data, develop arguments and make judgements based on fundamental concepts relevant to the application of engineering to the aerospace industry. Aerospace courses give a broad aerospace education and offer an opportunity to specialise in mechanical, materials, computational, propulsion, management and communications sciences applied to aerospace. Aerospace Engineering is the classical aerospace discipline for the design, manufacture and maintenance of any aerospace vehicle, such as planes and helicopters. It gives a broad, multidisciplinary education enabling the students to succeed in a wide variety of aerospace-related careers. Students will also study computational modelling, computational fluid mechanics and aerospace materials, for which the College of Engineering has a worldwide reputation. The College of Engineering at Swansea University has been involved at the forefront of aerospace technology for many years, with a distinguished history of working in partnership with international aerospace companies and many exciting projects from the super-jet Airbus A380 to the 1,000mph Land Speed Record breaking BLOODHOUND SSC.
Accreditation
Our courses are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).
The accreditation is based on rigorous reviews of our course content and delivery by the professional bodies. This means that, after a degree from the College of Engineering and structured industrial training, our graduates can aim for the prized “Chartered Engineer” status. This gives our graduates valuable experience, whilst adding to their qualifications, status and career prospects.
International students
We welcome applications from international students to either Levels One or Two. Direct entry into the second year (Level Two) of the degree courses is possible provided you have already covered the topics from Level One – for example, through a relevant diploma. The Aerospace Engineering courses offered are based on a world-leading reputation in a number of fields, such as computational methods and materials. This, combined with close working relationships with a number of international companies, greatly enhances the courses and your career prospects upon graduating.
