The Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre (SESRC) offers a three-year full-time BSc honours degree course in Sports Science. The course is designed to provide students with an academically rigorous and professionally relevant programme of study of the factors which influence participation and personal performance in sports and the methods by which these factors may be investigated. Specifically, the course is designed to develop students' knowledge, intellectual skills, key skills and practical skills to enable them to pursue worthwhile careers not only in sport and related areas, but also in a broad range of other occupational areas which require high levels of intellectual and key skills.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have passed English Language, Mathematics, and at least one science subject at GCSE (grade C or above). In addition, typical offers will include the following qualifications:

  • A-Level: Typical offers of 280-300 UCAS points are based on 3 A-level grades (A2 level). At least one of these subjects should be in a science subject (includes Mathematics, excludes Physical Education and Psychology). We do not accept General Studies as an A-level.
  • AVCE: We will accept double awards as part of an overall profile. Depending upon the content of the AVCE studied, this qualification may or may not be considered as a science subject.
  • BTEC National Diploma: Typical offers require a distinction profile (DDM or DDD) in a science-related discipline (includes Exercise Science and Sports Science, excludes Sports Studies).
  • Higher National Diploma: Typical offers require a distinction profile in a science-related discipline for entry at level 1 or level 2 of the degree programme.
  • Other qualifications: The Admissions Selector is happy to consider applicants with other UK and international qualifications (e.g., International Baccalaureate, Access, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate, etc.).

Course Structure

The course is organised into three levels, which correspond to the three years of the course for a full-time student.

Level 1 is concerned with the development of knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts and principles underlying the study of Sports Science within three main areas: sport in society, the sub-disciplines of Sports Science (biomechanics, physiology, psychology), information and communications technology.

Level 2 is concerned with developing knowledge and understanding in four interdisciplinary areas: movement analysis, the response and adaptation of the body to exercise, motor skill acquisition, research methods.

Level 3 students will have the opportunity to pursue a combination of 1 compulsory dissertation module ( SR-311, 40 credits), plus choice of 4 modules from a list of 10 elective modules.

It should be noted that not every module listed in this website may be available every year, and changes may be made to the details of the modules. Prospective students and others who require further information shosuld address their enquiry to the Department of Sports Science.

Teaching and Learning

The approach to teaching and learning in the BSc Sports Science course is essentially collaborative and, as such, involves lectures with problem-solving activities in which students are encouraged to work together, study packages using printed and computer-based materials which can be tackled independently or in groups, laboratory practical work in groups, group projects, task-oriented seminars, debates, and tutorials. The methods of assessment used in the BSc Sports Science course include various types of coursework (problem worksheets, laboratory reports, results of practical exercises, class tests), summative assignments (essays, extended laboratory reports, posters), and unseen examinations (objective and essay format).
