Natural Products Cymru / Cynhyrchion Naturiol Cymru
Welcome to the Natural Products Cymru (Cynhyrchion Naturiol Cymru) website. Natural Products Cymru is a world leading RTD consortium that will facilitate the development of a vibrant, intellectually and economically sustainable biotechnology sector based on exploiting high value natural products in Wales over the coming decades.

NPCymru is an exciting new strategic development in Wales based on exploiting natural products to underpin the region’s growing biotechnology sector. NPCymru integrates internationally recognised expertise from the Universities of Swansea, Bangor and Aberystwyth to provide a network of excellence in support of existing international and local biotech companies, and a platform for establishing new companies to exploit novel bioactive products. The range of expertise harnesses state of the art technologies in Research and Technological Development of products from a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic life-forms. In addition to new product RTD, NPCymru provides critical service support, for example in bio-processing and bio-analytical support, to industrial partners in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.
High-value natural products are vital resources in the health, pharmaceutical, agrochemical and food industries and also provide the basis for research and medical diagnostic kits. The unique value of natural products is attributable to millions of years of evolution optimising chemical structures with highly specific bioactive properties. As yet, humans have accessed only a tiny fraction of the vast reservoir of these bioactive compounds from readily accessible plants, animals and micro-organisms. A wealth of novel compounds remains to be developed from a vast and as yet untapped biological diversity present in both terrestrial and aquatic habitats.
NPCymru is focussed on high-value natural products that can be exploited in three main areas: Crop protection and pest control; Pharmaceuticals; and Nutraceuticals/Feed Additives. These areas of focus reflect a critical mass of expertise in the participating HEIs and companies engaged with NPCymru .
