Transposon Express Installation Guide

Install Instructions

To successfully install and run the application you will need to download and run two setup programs: -

  1. The zipped MySQL windows distribution (this needs to be 'unzipped' and installed with administrator privileges and to directory "C:\MySQL" (this is the default behaviour). [download winzip evaluation programme here]
  2. The TExpress Setup application (this also needs to be installed by either an administrator or a "Power User")

The program is designed to run in either Windows 2000 (NT 5.0) or Windows XP. Attempting to install the program in earlier versions of Windows will work, but results in erratic program behaviour and is not recommended.

MySQL installation

Locate and click on the "MySQL SETUP.EXE" file. You should then see the MySQL setup program start :-

MySQL welcome page

Please continue through the installation program by pressing the 'Next' buttons. Be sure that you install the MySQL database to the default location ("C:\mysql"), as shown on the next diagram. Do not install the drivers to a different location, as the Transposon Express application searches in the MySQL directory to see if the drivers (and databases) exist : -

Please install mysql to the default location

Continue through the setup program by pressing the 'Next' button and accepting all the defaults (i.e. typical install).

Transposon Express Install

Locate and click on the "TExpress-Setup.exe" file. You should (after the installer has verified itself) be greeted with the welcome message: -

TExpress setup welcome screen

Please click the 'Next' Button to continue. Accept the licensing terms (GNU) document and continue. Transposon Express will be copied to your machine into the directory "C:\Program Files\Transposon Express" or wherever windows has specified you keep program files. If the setup routine detects that you do not have the MySQL ODBC drivers installed, then it will launch that specific installer:-

MySQL - ODBC drivers

If this setup wizard is run, then please accept all the default values by pressing the 'Next' buttons. Please do not cancel the setup at any time, as this will cause the Transposon Express installation to fail. When this setup has completed you should be returned to the Transposon Express installer and eventually asked to reboot the machine. Please reboot the machine before you attempt to use the application.

When you return to windows, you should have a "TExpress" entry in your "Programs" of your start menu. Use this entry to start the application.

Troubleshooting

This is a fairly complex installation routine, where 3 major software components are sequentially installed. Things do go wrong. If the application fails to load, please check and try the following: -

1) Download and install the latest version of MDAC from the microsoft website.

2) Check that MySQL is installed and running as a service - To do this, click on the start menu, scroll up to 'Settings' and then click on "Control panel": -

Open the "Administrative Tools" and then "Services". In the following window you should see an entry like the following (highlighted). Please check that the service is running, if it isn't then press the 'play' icon at the top of the window. You will also need to set the Startup Type to "automatic" (double click the MySQL line to see it's properties). Try the Transposon Express application again.

3) Check that the MySQL-ODBC drivers installed correctly. From the control panel, select "Administrative Tools" and then "Data Sources (ODBC)" : -

Verify that the myodbc3-test entry exists in the list. If it doesn't try reinstalling the application.
