In June 2008 the leading Turkish-German writer Feridun Zaimoglu came to Swansea as guest writer in residence at the Centre for Contemporary German Literature. On 25 June he gave a powerful reading from his novel Liebesbrand (2008). The event was recorded not only by SU Media Resources but also by a film crew from Avanti Media, making a documentary featuring Zaimoglu and Thees Uhlmann in the ARTE series 'Into the Night with ...', broadcast in September 2008. Following the reading, Zaimoglu answered questions on Romanticism and religion, musicality in prose, the novel as social comment, and his football allegiances. This was the afternoon before the Germany-Turkey football match at Euro 2008.

Zaimoglu first came to Swansea a decade earlier, in November 1998, when the Centre for Contemporary German Literature hosted a conference on 'Postmigrant Turkish-German Culture: Transnationalism, Translation, Politics of Representation'. The conference was organised by Dr Tom Cheesman, Lecturer in the Department and Co-ordinator of the 'Axial Writing' Research Project.
On the first evening of the conference, Zaimoglu gave a sparkling reading from three of his books: Kanak Sprak: 24 Mißtöne vom Rande der Gesellschaft (1995), Abschaum: Die wahre Geschichte von Ertan Ongun (1997) and Koppstoff: Kanaka Sprak vom Rande der Gesellschaft (1998).
