 25 February 2010 Host: Professor M Sheldon

Professor Jo Price
Dept. of Clinical Veterinary Science, Bristol University

Bone and Sex: Common pathways, different objectives.

Post-menopausal osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and a high risk of fracture. The lifetime risk of a fragility fracture in a 50 year old Caucasian American woman is 45 percent and in a man 13 percent. The association between declining bone mass and bioavailable estrogen in both sexes is strong, but the causal relationship has yet to be defined. Professor Jo Price and her colleague Lance Lanyon, have worked extensively on the relationship between bone health, loading, and sex over the last 20 years.
