The School of Law has recently established a Unit for the delivery of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Solicitors and Barristers, building upon our existing strengths as an accredited Law Society training provider.
Our CPD Unit has already delivered courses on the new Criminal Justice Act 2003, which have been favourably received by the professions. We will continue to deliver CPD courses for lawyers at all levels of training and experience, by way of illustration including criminal law / litigation updates, family law (including the new law on adoption), personal injury and clinical negligence and consumer credit. Through our work with the Technium initiative we seek to develop a Welsh legal practitioner specialism in the fields of Energy and Environmental Law.
Our Swansea Family Court Inter Disciplinary Forum was established in October 2000. The Forum is facilitated by the School of Law in partnership with the local family judiciary. It is normally chaired by the designated family judge at Swansea Civil Justice Centre. The Forum meets twice a year in Swansea. The aims of the Forum are to bring together practitioners from all the professions involved in family cases in the courts in south andwest Wales, to provide the opportunity for issues of common interest or concern to be discussed and to inform and update practitioners on legaland other relevant developments relating to the work of the family courts. The programme includes speaker presentations and workshops. Participantsin the Forum include solicitors, barristers, members of the judiciary, CAFCASS officers, social workers, paediatricians and other health careprofessionals, members of voluntary agencies, the police, court clerks and interested academics. The Forum attracts CPD accreditation.

Our Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law continues to serve the training needs of BIMCO, BP and a consortium of City Law firms. BIMCO, the World’s largest organisation representing shipowners, is based outside Copenhagen, Denmark and came into existence in 1904. It offers a range of services to shipowners including educational courses. We act in collaboration with BIMCO in providing tailored masterclasses and summer schools. The masterclasses currently focus on bills of lading, time charterparties and laytime and demurrage but the coverage is flexible and may vary according to demand. Courses are held at many different locations around the World including Athens, Instanbul, New Orleans, Nice, Rotterdam, Singapore and Genova. Two summer schools are presently held each year, usually in Denmark. We provide in-house training to BP on charterparties and related documents for employees. In addition we provide Foundation Courses in Marine Insurance, Bills of Lading and Charterparties for young solicitor trainees employed by a consortium of City Law firms.
