
What is ECDL?
The European Computer Licence (ECDL) is an internationally recognised IT qualification which enables you to demonstrate your competence in computer skills. It is recognised in over 146 countries worldwide with approx 2 million studying/achieving in the UK. ECDL was designed for those who wish to: gain a benchmark qualification, develop IT skills and enhance career prospects.
No prior knowledge of IT or computer skills is required to study for ECDL and there is no age limit.
Version 5 the latest ECDL syllabus comprises seven modules which can be taken in any order and covers the key concepts of computing, its practical applications and their use in the workplace and in society.
ECDL Modules
- IT Security for Users Level 1
System Performance Security, Information Security,Technical Security, Data Security, Guidelines & Procedures.
- Using the computer and managing files/IT User Fundamentals Level 1
Operating System, File Managment, Maintain Systems, Print Management, Security, Law Health & Safety.
- Word Processing Level 2
Using the application, Document creation, Formatting, Objects, Mail Merge, Prepare outputs.
- Spreadsheets Level 2
Using the application, Cells, Manging worksheets, Formatting, Charts, Formulas & functions, Prepare outputs.
- Databases
Understanding databases, Using the application, Tables, Retrieving information, Objects & Outputs.
- Presentations
Using the application, Developing a presentation, Text, Charts, Graphical objects, Prepare outputs.
- Web Browsing & communication/Using the Internet & Email Level 1
The Internet, Using the Browser, Using the Web, Web Outputs, Electronic Communication, Using & managing e-mail.
To gain the qualification all 7 modules must have been successfully passed after which the British Computer Society (BCS) will issue the ECDL certificate. If you would like further information on the ECDL qualification please visit the BCS/ECDL website.
Study for ECDL in LIS - Swansea University
You study in an open/distance learning format - which enables you to work at your own pace and at a time/place that suits you.
- The online courseware requires Windows XP or higher, Windows Internet Explorer (IE). Please note the courseware will not run in an Apple Macintosh or Mozilla Firefox enviroment.
- Courseware & testing will cover ECDL V5 syllabus using Office 2007 & Vista.
- There is a weekly drop-in test/support session on Wednesdays from 10am - 1pm during which time you can sit the ECDL module tests which are computer based and last 45 minutes.
- You have one calendar year from registration to complete all 7 ECDL modules.
- To prepare for the real tests there is one practice/diagnostic test for each module.
- Your online study can be complemented, if required, with individual ECDL module booklets which can be downloaded (pdf) or borrowed with a valid Swansea University library card.
Costs
The course fee includes: access to course material, support/test sessions, BCS registration, logbook, 7 practice tests & 7 live tests. In the event of a failed module test a re- sit costs £15 per test.
