The Library & Information Service at Swansea University aims to provide equal access to resources for all our customers. We work closely with the University's Disability Office, and with the Recording Centre for the Blind.
Library and Information Centre
Within the Library & Information Centre there is ramp access to the main entrance on Level 3, where toilet facilities are situated. A payphone is available outside the library.
The Issue Desk has a low level enquiries desk where students (and guide dogs) can sit while library assistants fetch items from the lower levels for them.
There is lift access to other floors for wheelchairs.
PC teaching rooms are on level 4 with lift access for wheelchairs. Most pcs for student use are on level 3 (entry level). Online catalogue terminals at sitting height are available on each level of the LIC building. Some PC tables in the Study Hall and PC rooms have been especially raised to take large wheelchairs, and wheelchair users have priority on these PCs.
Supernova USBs and Digital Voice Recorders are available for loan from the Issue Desk on level 3.
This is situated on Level 2 of the LIC, near to the fire escape. It has workstations with 20" screen networked Pentium PCs and SmartView Xtra colour CCTV systems. SUPERNOVA screen magnification software is loaded on to all the PCs in this room. A laser printer is networked to the PCs. There is also a scanner.
There is an APH tape recorder, Perkins Brailler and shelving space for students to keep their own or RNIB tapes and Braille texts.
The room also houses a small collection of Braille texts including the Oxford English Dictionary, some Shakespeare plays and some music titles. Students can leave tapes and braille texts loaned by the RNIB on shelves in this room. There is a large button phone for internal calls with a large print internal telephone directory. There is also a water bowl for the use of guide dogs.
Students and their helpers may work in the room at any time the Library is open. There is no booking system. Access to the room is by scanning your id card; the room is normally kept locked to secure any student property kept there.
Helpers employed for disabled students are allowed to have their own borrowing facilities in the Library.
Branch Libraries
The South Wales Miners Library on the Hendrefoelan campus has wheelchair access to the ground floor only, but staff can fetch items from the upper floor.
