ISS Sessions for Academic Staff
Swansea’s Research Information System (RIS) & Repository (Cronfa)
Wed. 8th Feb. 2 - 3 pm, PC Room 3 in the Library
This workshop will guide staff in inputting their research publications into RIS, Swansea University’s system for managing REF publication details. These publication details will soon be copied over to Cronfa, our repository on the web, increasing the visibility of our research around the world to access them and ultimately increase citations to SU research output. There are issues surrounding copyright and open access publishing, so please attend this useful session.
SCOPUS - Research literature searching and citation analysis using the database chosen for REF bibliometrics

SCOPUS is the largest abstract and citation database of both peer-reviewed research literature and quality web sources, and covers a wide variety of subjects including science, engineering, medicine, health and life sciences, arts and humanities, social sciences, psychology, and economics.
Learn how to: search it effectively for research articles; use it for citation analysis; search for publications from Swansea University; and, ensure that all your author details are correct.
Mintel market research information

Swansea has a new subscription to Mintel, a database of market research information. This is of obvious use to Business and Economics but also to technology and e-commerce related project areas.
Mintel comprises:
Mintel Oxygen - a database of market research reports covering the 5 main areas of Food, Drink, Leisure, E-commerce and Technology, mostly focusing on the UK with some European reports;
And
Mintel Global Markets Navigator which contains industry and country data on market size, market share and forecast data for thousands of consumer goods categories worldwide.

FAME (Financial Analysis Made Easy)

FAME is a database from Bureau van Dijk which allows the user access to financial and company information for companies in the UK and Ireland, large and small. Seven million companies are listed over the last 10 years, even companies which have ceased to exist. The user can simply retrieve a company report for a single company or search for companies within specific parameters, for example, list companies according to industry sector with over £X turnover in a particular geographical area. Results can be exported to Excel.
EndNote

EndNote is bibliographic software which can be used for managing your references. It allows you to build up a database of the references you have used in your research. It also works alongside Microsoft Word to format them in your finished work, saving you time. More information can be found on our EndNote web page. This hands on workshop will introduce you to the basics of using EndNote.
Finding Theses

Postgraduate theses can be hard to trace, partly because many have not been formally published. This session will show ways of finding them by means of databases such as Dissertations and Theses, Index to Theses and ETHOS. Through ETHOS and other sources many more theses are now freely available for viewing online.
Digimap

DigiMap gives online access to Ordnance Survey maps of Great Britain. This session will teach you how to (i) access a ready-made map through Digimap ROAM; (ii) create your own map using DigiMap CARTO using boundary data available in the database; (iii) download digitised boundary datasets using UKBorders’ Easy Download facility. DigiMap data can also be downloaded for GIS and CAD software – we can show you how to download the data but not how to work with these types of software as they are not available to ISS.
