This section of the website is for current students. If you are a future student considering studying in the Department please follow this link for a section dedicated to you.

Personal Tutors: As a student of the Media Department you have been assigned a Personal Tutor, who is your first point of call if you have any questions or queries. It is best to contact them by e-mail, or check their office door which displays their office hours.

Student Representatives: You have also been assigned a Student Representative who attends meetings of the staff/student committee. If you want anything raised at one of these meetings, access the staff student link which will give you details of your representative.

Advice on studying: There is plenty of comprehensive information on 'how to’ write an essay, or tackle an exam paper if you follow these links.  They provide very clear guidelines on referencing and bibliographies. These pages are essential reading as marks can be deducted for style, layout or the absence of a bibliography. There are even sample essays, bibliographies and past exam papers, so make sure you use these resources.

Advice on plagiarism: There is plenty of information on the subject of plagiarism, something the Department takes very seriously. Please familiarise yourself with the plagiarism warning and the Departmental guidance on ‘how to’ avoid plagiarism.

Careers: It may seem a long way off but at the back of most student minds is the big question - what am I going to do when I finish? Many of you perhaps don’t have a clue, or are confused by the number of careers open to graduates in the field of media. The University has a comprehensive careers site with specialist advice, from careers advisers, on all aspects of jobs and careers from completing psychometric tests to writing your CV. Careers also organise regular speakers who work in media, PR and film. These talks are really useful and give you an idea of what it is actually like to work in a particular industry – watch out for e-mails alerting you to these free talks, or check the careers pages for more details.

Visiting speakers: The Department enjoys a wide range of academic and professional speakers. Visits are scheduled from leading practitioners in the field – dates and times will be given to you by individual tutors.

Placements: We are currently working on building relationships with employers. The PR degree has already secured a number of student placements. For example, two students will be spending two weeks at leading PR agency Golley Slater.  These placements are available on a competitive basis and students are asked to complete a client brief, which the organisation will use to form part of the selection process. However, it should be noted these placements do not form part of your academic work and your performance in such a brief has no impact on your academic study or marks. The other degree schemes are also working on similar placement programmes.

Module Handbooks: Your module handbooks provide a wealth of information on module content, academic guidelines and what is required from any assessment. They also provide information on how the Department requires any course work to be submitted. You will receive one for each module from the module coordinator.  Extra copies may be obtained from the department secretary.

We hope you have a successful and rewarding experience at Swansea!

If you have any other concerns or questions please contact the Departmental Secretary
