Careers
The University has a comprehensive service and a detailed careers section on this website offering specialist advice on all aspects of jobs and careers from completing psychometric tests to writing your CV.
There is also plenty of information and advice available within the Department on careers in media, film and public relations. The lecturers will gladly discuss their knowledge and experience of various career paths, while several of the tutors have considerable experience of journalism, public relations, marketing, broadcast production and web design that they will also gladly share.
In addition, the careers service and this Department often arrange talks from professionals who work in television, journalism, media, PR and film. There is no better way to find out about a job than listening to a first hand account.
The vocational aspect of your degree studies is also designed to inspire and nurture your career ambitions. Several involve students delivering multimedia presentations, seminars and research papers individually and in groups, while many of the practical projects replicate as closely as possible what happens in industry.
To enhance students' work experience we are currently building relationships with employers and developing the work placements that students can apply for. The PR degree, for example, has already secured placements at leading PR agency Golley Slater. However, it should be noted these placements do not form part of your academic work.
Valuable skills can also be developed through volunteering work for organisations such as while at Swansea. Visit the Student Union website and search for opportunities to run for sabbatical posts, work on campus media or join clubs and societies. All of these additional exepriences and skills can be yours while a student at Swansea University and are valuable to future employers.
Finally, you might consider postgraduate study as your next step when you graduate so visit the pages of the department. The department has a number of exciting MA programmes that offer full-time and part-time study on taught research courses that will take your understanding to the next level. We also offer research MPhil and PhDs in the department supervised by members of the department who are research-active in their respective fields. The department is, along with the University, committed to research excellence and encourages its research students to attend seminars, conferences and take part in the lively research-based activities in the University. We also encourage our research students to apply for external grants (from AHRC and the ESRC) and offer them research methods training and support and mentoring in developing their academic skills and abilities.
