Throughout the year Swansea University’s Student Recruitment Team attend more than 130 days of Higher Education (HE) and Careers Conventions across the UK, organise three University-wide Undergraduate Open Days, and visit more than 120 schools and colleges to talk about the study options for undergraduate students.
Barrie Clark, the University’s Student Recruitment Manager, said: “Choosing where to study for your degree is a big decision and we are here to assist potential students who want to know what’s on offer at Swansea.
“Before completing your UCAS application form, we strongly recommend you visit a HE Convention to give you an initial idea of the range and breadth of courses available throughout the UK and vital information such as entry requirements for courses. We then recommend visiting the universities you are interested in, to find out which course and institution is best suited to your individual needs.
“University Open Days give a more detailed insight into what’s offered in the particular study area you are interested in, and what your potential career prospects will be like. You can also find out more about the practical side of living away from home for the first time as a student, with information available on local accommodation and living in the area of the University you choose.”
Members of Swansea University Student Recruitment Team will be attending the following HE Conventions in 2010. HE Convention Schedule
Swansea University will also hold Open Days for prospective 2011 entry undergraduate students and their families on Friday 9 July, Friday 17 September, and Saturday 23 October.
The Open Days, from 9am until 4pm, will give a flavour of Swansea’s award-winning student experience* and information on more than 50 wide-ranging subjects on offer at the University – from American Studies to Zoology.
Staff will be on hand to give advice on course options, and potential students will be able to talk to department admissions tutors. There will be advice available on admissions procedures, student finance, studying in Europe, graduate careers, and support available for disabled students.
Current students will lead tours of the University campus and sports facilities and the Students’ Union will give talks on student life.
Accommodation is always an important consideration for applicants and their families, and visitors can explore the range Halls of Residence on campus, with properties in the Hendrefoelan Student Village visited by student-led coach tours.
There will also be sessions for parents on tuition fees, student loans and grants, living costs and welfare.
Some of Swansea’s Academic Schools also arrange subject specific visits throughout the year. Please contact the relevant for more information.
If you cannot make any of the Open Day dates and you would prefer to make an independent visit to the University, you can also download the self-guided tour pack by clicking here UG Self-guided Tour Pack.
Grant James, a Computer Science graduate, said: “One of the best things about my course is having enthusiastic lecturers who really are experts in their fields and who know how to transfer their knowledge to students. The facilities are top-notch too: Computer Science students have exclusive access to their own computer labs, an invaluable resource.
“Of course the other factor that had a big influence on my decision to come to Swansea was the location: coming from Birmingham, the idea of living so close to the coast sealed the deal!”
Kate Larkin, a French and German with Business Studies graduate, said: “Like any student I was very apprehensive starting university. However, I was soon put at ease with the German section. The staff were all really friendly, I have always had a lot of support from my lecturers and all the staff are always more than willing to help. Both staff and students have made my time at Swansea very enjoyable.”
Jo Rhys Thomas, a BSc Midwifery graduate, said: “Having been passionate about becoming a midwife for many years, I attended Swansea University’s Open Day and having spoken to the then ‘current students’, it fuelled both my interest and enthusiasm to study. I was also fortunate enough to live within commuting distance to a university that was highly rated for this course.”
