An MPhil is a postgraduate research degree which constitutes a critical evaluation and analysis of a body of knowledge and/or an original contribution to knowledge.

The School of Engineering has an excellent international reputation for high quality research. The extensive collaborative links numerous well-known international businesses and organisations mean excellent employment prospects for our graduates.
The School is research active in many fields including; Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Biological Process Engineering, Civil and Computational Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Nanotechnology.
The School is active in undertaking multi-disciplinary research that crosses the boundaries of traditional subjects. A good example of this is the recently created multimillion pound Nanotechnology Centre, which links many areas of engineering with physics and mathematics.
Four recognised Centres of Excellence in Civil and Computational Engineering, Complex Fluids Processing, Materials Engineering, and Communications and Software Development, provide a key link between basic research and the exploitation of knowledge and expertise with local and national companies.
Normally a first or second class degree in a related subject. Good English language skills are also required.
UK and EU students - The School of Engineering offers generous bursaries to UK and EU students to cover fees and/or living costs. Assessment is carried out on submitting your thesis which is internally and externally examined. Students are also expected to defend their research in a viva.
