The School of Engineering has an excellent reputation for Civil Engineering. We hold the prestigious 5* RAE rating combined with the Excellent in Teaching rating. The MSc course in Civil Engineering provides high quality postgraduate training for national and international students in civil engineering. It is designed to attract both recent graduates and practising professionals from related industries who are required to pursuit a further learning matching section in order to achieve a Chartered Engineer status. The course is closely linked to the MEng scheme in Civil Engineering. The modules on this course can also be studied as stand-alone modules for those in employment seeking professional development or further knowledge in particular subject fields.
Part-time study: 2 or 3 years
The civil engineering sector is one of the largest employers in the UK, the current demand for civil engineering graduates is very strong and is predicted to have a healthy growth for the next few years. Our aim is for students to develop the potential to become future leaders and champions of industry.
The aim of the course is to provide an in-depth training in more advanced knowledge and particularly modelling and analysis techniques for the solution of problems in civil engineering analysis and design. The specific objectives are:
This course provides students with the knowledge, motivation, and self-learning skills required for continuous professional development during their future careers and provides valuable experience of working on complex projects both as individuals and as team members.
The course is made up from 180 credits, gained through both taught and project modules. All modules are 10 credits unless otherwise stated.
* Compulsory modules/projects
The normal entry requirement for Masters students is a First or a Second Class Honours Degree in Civil Engineering or similar relevant engineering or science discipline.
Students holding overseas degrees are very welcome and their degree qualifications are assessed in accordance with their referees’ comments and our long established experience in this area.
Candidates who do not possess an Honours Degree but who have sufficient professional experience in a relevant area may also be admitted in special circumstances.

This course was new for September 2008 entry and we will be seeking professional accreditation from JBM and ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) during their visit in 2011. All our existing Civil Engineering undergraduate and postgraduate schemes are currently accredited and we do not anticipate any problems in securing JBM accreditation.
The full-time scheme lasts for 12 months and consists of two taught semesters (Part I), followed by a three-month period of individual research (Part II) during the summer. The taught modules including the group project - totaling 120 credits are - examined and students must perform satisfactorily in these examinations before they are allowed to proceed to the research phase (Part II). In the School of Engineering at Swansea University, the Level M modules are delivered in a two-week block mode. The MSc course is based on the Level M of the existing undergraduate aerospace degree building on the extensive research activities in materials engineering and in computational methods. In the School of Engineering at Swansea University, the Level M modules are delivered in a two-week block mode.
