Electronics for sustainable energy generation and utilization is a vital industry in today’s energy thirsty world. Energy generation and transformation, in the most efficient way possible, is the key to reducing carbon emissions. This MSc course addresses both these themes in depth with modules focussing on power and renewable energy generation technologies, power electronics, and new semiconductor materials for more efficient electronics. These subjects are highly topical and scientifically important. There is also an emphasis on cutting edge research technology with modules covering nanotechnology and MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems). In addition to this, there are some more general engineering modules which will give students a good foundation and develop their background knowledge and key engineering skills.

The MSc is representative of the prominent research areas in electronics, nanotechnology and energy generation technologies at Swansea University. The advanced topics covered will provide a stimulating challenge for MSc students and give them a valuable knowledge base for further study or a career in industry.

This course provides students with the knowledge, motivation, and self-learning skills required for continuous professional development during their future careers and provides valuable experience of working on complex projects both as individuals and as team members.  It is made up of 180 credits, 120 taught credits and 60 credits of a research project.  Taught modules on the course can vary each year but currently include:

• EGLM00 Energy Efficient Electronics Technologies
• EGLM01 Wide band-gap Electronics
• EGLM02 Advanced Power Electronics and Drives
• EGLM03 Modern Control Systems
• EGTM71 Power Generation Systems
• EGIM14 Computational Case Study
• EGIM16 Communication Skills for Engineers
• EGNM01 Probing at the Nanoscale
• EGNM02 Soft Nanotechnology
• EGTM71 Environmental Assessment and Legislation
• EG-M85 Strategic Project Planning
• MSc Research Project (60 credits)

Our aim is for students to develop the potential to become future leaders and champions of industry.
