The School of Engineering has an excellent reputation for Engineering. We are recognized for our world-class research and hold the Excellent in Teaching rating. The MSc in Mechanical Engineering will suit candidates who have already completed an undergraduate degree, either at Swansea or elsewhere, and wish to pursue Chartered status via the Institution of Mechanical Engineers or who wish to further their knowledge before entering employment. The modules on this course can also be studied as stand-alone modules for those in employment seeking professional development or further knowledge in particular subject fields.

The course aims to give students a high quality overview of the techniques of modern Mechanical Engineering and to present examples of use from a wide range of disciplines and industries.

Students to complete an MSc project of practical relevance and will finish the course equipped  to make informed judgements on the most appropriate approach to a range of Mechanical Engineering problems.

The modules on this course are of high industrial relevance and the benefits to employability are immediate. Our aim is for students to develop the potential to become future leaders and champions of industry.

All modules/projects are compulsory on this course, there are no optional modules at present.

Standard Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement for Masters students is a First or a Second Class Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar relevant engineering or science discipline (for example, Physics, Mathematics).

Students holding overseas degrees are very welcome and their degree qualifications are assessed in accordance with their referees’ comments and our long established experience in this area.

Candidates who do not possess an Honours Degree but who have sufficient professional experience in a relevant area may also be admitted in special circumstances.

Research

The staff within the School of Engineering are involved in many exciting state-of-the-art projects, many of which are in collaboration with industry which means there is a wide range of exciting MSc project topics that can be chosen. Accreditation

This course is new for September 2008 entry and we are currently seeking professional accreditation from IMEchE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers). All our existing Mechanical Engineering undergraduate and postgraduate schemes are currently accredited and we do not anticipate any problems in securing accreditation.

Assessment

The full-time scheme lasts for 12 months and consists of two taught semesters (Part I), followed by a three-month period of individual research (Part II) during the summer. The taught modules - totaling 120 credits are - examined and students must perform satisfactorily in these examinations before they are allowed to proceed to the research phase (Part II). In the School of Engineering at Swansea University, the Level M modules are delivered in a two-week block mode.
