With increasing reliance on modern technology in medicine there is a growing need for specialists trained in the physical sciences. Rapid advances in diagnostic techniques such as MRI and PET offer new views of human physiology and new approaches to the treatment of disease. Medical physics is a highly multidisciplinary subject offering an exciting career with the additional satisfaction of contributing directly to patient treatment and care. An accredited MSc, in combination with a NHS or equivalent training programme, is currently the main route for graduates seeking the professional qualification of Clinical Scientist in Medical Physics. The School of Engineering has an excellent reputation for Engineering. We are recognized for our world-class research and hold the Excellent in Teaching rating. The course will be taught in conjunction with staff from the School of Medicine and specialist Medical Physicists at Swansea NHS Trust.
Part-time study: 2 or 3 years
This course provides students with the necessary knowledge and understanding of fundamental aspects of the use of radiation in medicine in order that students are conversant in medical terms, human physiology and radiation mechanisms. A direct link to clinical practice is provided through hands-on instruction with equipment used routinely in the hospital setting. Students are prepared for research and clinical practice in a rapidly changing field, including tuition in computer modelling, human engineering and the medico-legal issues they imply. Students are imparted with the knowledge, motivation, and self-learning skills required for continuous professional development during their future careers and gain the valuable experience of working on complex projects both as individuals and as team members. Our aim is for students to develop the potential to become future leaders and champions of industry.
The normal entry requirement for Masters students is a First or a Second Class Honours Degree in a relevant discipline.
Students holding overseas degrees are very welcome and their degree qualifications are assessed in accordance with their referees’ comments and our long established experience in this area.
Candidates who do not possess an Honours Degree but who have sufficient professional experience in a relevant area may also be admitted in special circumstances.
UK and EU students - Students can apply for one of the University’s Taught Masters Bursaries. Please visit the Taught Masters Scholarship & Bursaries page for more information.
NHS funded bursaries are also available to UK students, please email for further details.
International Students - Please visit the International Scholarship & Bursaries page for more information regarding scholarships.
The MSc programme is a key component of a highly successful teaching and research partnership between the Schools of Engineering and School of Medicine. The staff within the schools are involved in many exciting state-of-the-art projects, many of which are in collaboration with medical practitioners from Swansea NHS Trust which means there is a wide range of exciting MSc project topics that can be chosen. To find out more about our world-class research visit the School of Engineering Research section and the research section of the School of Medicine website.
The programme has been accredited by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM). IPEM is the professional body that works with physical science, engineering and clinical professionals in academia, healthcare services and industry in the U.K., and supports clinical scientists and technologists in their practice through the provision and assessment of education and training.
The full-time scheme lasts for 12 months and consists of two taught semesters (Part I), followed by a three-month period of individual research (Part II) during the summer. The taught modules - totalling 120 credits are - examined and students must perform satisfactorily in these examinations before they are allowed to proceed to the research phase (Part II).
