Swansea University - Welcome

International Students

International Students

The Physics Department has a truly international feel, with its mix of international staff, researchers and students from the UK, the EU and beyond. We have a strong international reputation, especially for our research, and are successful in attracting outstanding researchers, as well as an increasing number of international students both at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The specialised research interests of our staff means that students benefit from a rigorous treatment of the subject and acquire highly sought after skills.

Undergraduate Study

We offer a range of modular courses, well equipped teaching labs and excellent computing facilities . Full details of our degree programmes and courses are available at http://www.swan.ac.uk/physics/UndergraduateStudy/Courses/.

Our state-of- the-art equipment coupled with our research expertise directly adds value to your learning experience, via both final year project work and optional taught modules.

Our facilities include:

  • Laser spectroscopy systems based upon fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy;
  • epi-fluorescence microscopy setups;
  • Research-grade biological atomic force microscopes (AFM);
  • Beowulf computer cluster, with 130 CPU cores connected by a low-latency infiniband network;
  • 16 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with imaging and spectroscopic capabilities;
  • The possibility to complete a research project at CERN , the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Switzerland, for final year MPhys students

Postgraduate Study

At postgraduate level, we offer a choice of research-based courses, a PhD or MPhil, in two general areas:

Theoretical Particle Physics:

String theory, quantum gravity and the AdS/CFT correspondence

Lattice gauge theories, QCD

Phenomenology

Experimental Physics:

Atomic, Molecular and Laser Physics (including antimatter research)

Analytical Laser Spectroscopy

Nanoscale Physics

Research is at the core of the Physics Department, which provides a stimulating, dynamic research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources with highly research active staff involved at the forefront of scientific research. The Department received the top 4* and 3* ratings in the latest Research Assessment Exercise, meaning that our research is classed as world-leading or internationally excellent in terms of its originality, significance and rigour. We receive substantial funding from the research councils, and a variety of other organisations, including The Royal Society and The Leverhulme Trust.

Added to this is the spectacular location of Swansea University, set amongst parklands and at the edge of the UK’s first designated “area of outstanding natural beauty”. Unspoilt beaches and dramatic cliff top views provide a stunning location for water-sports, cycling and walking.  Take a look at http://www.swan.ac.uk/alumniandvisitors/MapsLocation/Picturegallery/ to see for yourself.
