Adult Continuing Education

The Department of Adult Continuing Education undertakes research into lifelong learning, conceptualised as holistic in character, embracing formal and informal education, in institutional and non-institutional settings, “from the cradle to the grave”.

Part-time study:

The MA in Lifelong Learning is a three-year, part-time course aimed at anyone involved in supporting, developing and providing lifelong learning and training, whether in a voluntary or professional capacity. The programme will examine current issues in lifelong learning and will offer opportunities for critical debate and reflection on theory and practice in the field.

Research students are invited to attend Departmental research seminars.

For students returning to formal education, the Department offers substantial help and guidance through its specialist Guidance Unit.

Standard Entry requirements

Each application for the MA in Lifelong Learning will be considered on its own merit.

General guideline:

  1. A degree or its equivalent from an approved institution or
  2. or those over 25 years of age, a minimum of two years in a relevant responsible position, e.g. in the area of adult education, community education, lifelong learning.

Research students are able to apply for Swansea University grants, which are allocated on a competitive basis.

The Department has research in all areas of post-compulsory education, with a strong emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach.

Much of the research work of the Department     of Adult Continuing Education is co-ordinated through the Welsh Centre for Research and Evaluation in Lifelong Learning. This provides a base for a number of funded projects and offers support for research students and visiting scholars.

The Centre was hailed as a unique research and policy development resource, which was the first of its kind in Wales and was sponsored from the outset by the Lifelong Learning Foundation. Swansea was seen as the natural home for this centre, having as it does long-standing expertise in the field of lifelong learning. The first findings of the research project were published in 1999.

The South Wales Miners’ Library provides specialist support for research in adult continuing education, particularly with reference to the South Wales Coalfield.
