A key element of the quality assurance and enhancement procedures at Swansea includes the appointment of an External Examiner. Only a person from another institution of sufficient seniority and experience is able to undertake this role. The role of the External Examiner includes, amongst other duties, consideration of examination papers and questions and review and moderation of items of assessment, including examination scripts, course assignments, projects or dissertations. External Examiners are expected to submit a full and frank report to the University, summarising the standard of questions, the standard of the examination process, the conduct of the examination process and the quality of the students. These reports are extremely important to the University in its drive to maintain and improve the standards of its provision, and are considered, along with a response from the College/Department, at Academic Boards, with institutional issues discussed at the Learning and Teaching Committee and other relevant University committees.
