CHIRAL has been created to bring together a number of professional units to form an integrated research centre of international standing. The School of Medicine continues to build its staffing and membership of CHIRAL will grow over the years to come.

The Centre undertakes research at the individual, organisational and population levels to

• improve the quality of patient care,
• maximise the cost-effectiveness of service delivery,
• develop primary prevention strategies directed at important public health problems and
• evaluate the effectiveness of new initiatives in health and social care.

CHIRAL embraces five research domains, covering epidemiology and prevention, health services research including health technology assessment and service delivery organisation, patient and user involvement, empowerment and health informatics.
