The Centre for Contemporary German Literature is unique to Wales and makes an important contribution to Germanic studies in Britain and Europe. It was founded in September 1993. For the first year it was funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and in its second year it was awarded a grant by the University's Development Fund. Directed by Professor Rhys W Williams, the Centre’s main aims are to promote contemporary German, Swiss and Austrian authors in Wales and in Britain and to provide stimulus for research into their works.
The Centre hosts visits from writers and academics and organises conferences on their work. The results of the initiative are published in a series of monographs by the University of Wales press. In the last two national Research Assessment Exercises the Centre was awarded a "5A" grade, designating research of internationally-recognised quality.
