The Vocabulary Acquisition Research Group (VARG) focuses its work on vocabulary acquisition and lexical behaviour in second language speakers.
The Group has an international reputation in L2 vocabulary studies. It maintains a large archive of vocabulary-related material (VARGA) and publishes software and bibliographical materials useful to those studying in this area.
A great deal has happened in the study of lexis and vocabulary over the last years. The vocabulary research group at Swansea is recognised as being of particularly high quality and productive, and is leading the field in the theoretical modelling and practical assessment of vocabulary knowledge. The annual VARG Conference, primarily intended for research students, is a popular feature of the group's activities.
The Research Group is a founder member of the M4AL research group and also has formal research links with the University of Barcelona, University of La Rioja and Concordia University, Montreal. Research work is sponsored by organisations including the Institute of Linguists and the Welsh Language Board.
