Research:
Professor Latreille’s research interests fall under the general heading of empirical labour economics, and currently focus on workplace conflict, mediation and the economics of Employment Tribunals (ETs), where he is acknowledged as a leading expert in the field among academics, policymakers and practitioners. In this capacity he was invited to contribute to the recent Resolving Workplace Disputes consultation, including a ministerial meeting on mediation in July 2011 with selected members of the workplace mediation practitioner community. Other current areas of interest include: disability and its impact on labour market outcomes; the determinants and impact of vocational training; self-employment; adm more recently, health and safety at work.
The applied and policy-relevant nature of this research has provided several opportunities to engage with policymakers and other outside clients, and Professor Latreille has undertaken funded work for various external bodies including, inter alia, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Ministry of Justice, the Welsh Assembly Government, the TUC, the Low Pay Commission and the Sector Skills Development Agency. From 2008-2009 he was the ESRC Visiting Research Fellow at Acas (co-sponsored by ESRC, Acas and CIPD) and worked on a series of projects under the heading A Place for Mediation in Workplace Conflict Management. In collaboration with colleagues at Westminster University (where he is a Visiting Fellow), Professor Latreille is currently completing a project for Acas looking at the role and impact of representation in ET cases. With Professor Sue Corby from Greenwich Business School he is also undertaking a further ESRC funded project looking at the role of lay members in ET and appellate EAT hearings (see http://www.gre.ac.uk/about/schools/business/enterprise/research/weru/research-projects).
In addition to the above, he has a developing interest in e-learning, both from a pedagogical and practitioner perspective, and was a co-winner of the national 2007 HEA Economics Network e-learning Award. He was also the recipient of the Student Nominated Award from the same organisation in 2008, becoming the first academic to have been recognised more than once. Other honours include a Jane N. Ryland Fellowship from EDUCAUSE to attend their 2011 Learning Initiative Conference in Washington DC. He is currently co-editing (with Professor Steve Greenlaw from Mary Washington University) an e-learning chapter for the Economics Network, for whom he is both an Advisory Group member and Associate.
Since November 2009 he has been, the inaugural Director of the Swansea Academy of Learning and Teaching (SALT).
