Dr Joanne Hemmings

Specialist Subjects: Joanne is a specialist in demographic and ethnographic methods, survey design and the integration of qualitative and quantitative approaches in reproductive and sexual health. She is experienced in designing, implementing and analysing the results of a range of qualitative approaches. She is skilled in designing and testing sexual behaviour survey instruments, including development of risk behaviour indicators. She has training skills in demographic and statistical research methods and qualitative methods and analysis. Joanne has experience facilitating research dissemination at community and policy level, and interpreting and communicating statistical information and ethnographic data for non-expert audiences. Country experience in Malawi, Jamaica and UK.

CONSULTANCY EXPERIENCE

  • May – July 2007: PEER Communications Specialist, Jamaica – Kingston, Constella/Hope Enterprises. Participatory qualitative research project for inner-city women into sexual relationships, HIV and condom use.
  • March 2004: Demographic Consultant - Switzerland, UNAIDS, AIDS In Africa: Scenarios for the Future project. Carried out epidemiological and demographic projections to feed into the development of scenarios.

EMPLOYMENT RECORD

  • Nov 2006 – Mar 2007 Social Scientist - Karonga Prevention Study, Malawi. Designed sexual behaviour survey for longitudinal demographic and epidemiological research project, including formative research, developing field protocols and pre-testing. Developed indicators for HIV risk behaviours. Carried out situational analysis of HIV/AIDS related services and prevention activities in the study area.
  • Oct 2005 – Jan 2006 Economic and Social Research Council Fellow - Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology. Researched and wrote briefing paper for parliament on public health in UK. Organised House of Lords dissemination seminar.
  • Oct 2005 – Jan 2006 Research Associate – Fathers in Prison study. A mixed-methods study of family dynamics among UK prisoners. 
  • 0ct 2003 – Feb 2004 Research Assistant – UNAIDS, London. Commissioning of research evidence for multi-disciplinary programme. Analysis and summary of policy and anthropological evidence.
  • Oct 2001 – Jan 2002 Information Analyst – Northern and Yorkshire Public Health Observatory. Analysis and presentation of local public health data for primary health care audiences.
