CURRENT RESEARCH
Research grants from the ESRC, DFID and others have funded my ethnographic fieldwork in the Caribbean, Cambodia, China, Kenya and Zambia, and applied policy research in a number of countries in Asia and Africa. Currently my main fields of research are:
- The political economy of population and fertility, including the impact of economic and population policy reform on fertility in China; social institutions and fertility change among the Kikuyu of Kenya and the Gwembe Tonga of Zambia; household structure and livelihood strategies in Bequia Island, the Caribbean.
- Access and equity in health through a longitudinal study in Cambodia.
- Reproductive health and HIV/AIDS, including equity in HIV/AIDS-prevention social marketing; adolescent vulnerability to HIV/AIDS; social context of reproductive health.
- Qualitative research methodology, including the development and application of the peer ethnographic method in HIV/AIDS, health and livelihoods research.
My advisory work and commissioned research for governments, multilateral agencies (UN, EC, World Bank), and civil society organisations has taken me to over 40 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Main areas of advisory expertise are in social, policy and institutional analysis in the health sector, and appraisal, planning, management, monitoring and evaluation of HIV/AIDS and reproductive health programmes.
