Biography

Having graduated from the University of Manchester (1977) I practised as a health visitor and midwife until joining the University of Portsmouth (1990). I started my career in education with the move of nursing into higher education, developing degree, Masters and doctoral programmes aimed at promoting high quality practice underpinned by sound theoretical and research based knowledge and skills. Following my MSc (1994), I developed my understanding of reflective writing strategies in nursing education as my doctorate (1999). I joined Canterbury Christ Church University as head of health and social welfare studies (2003), before becoming Head of School of Health Science at Swansea University (2007). I became Editor of the Journal of Nursing Management (2002), expanding my own writing career, which includes five books and numerous journal articles. I have presented keynote lectures at conferences, particularly relating to reflective practice, reflective writing, portfolio and professional development, and on leadership.
