Professor Stephen Allen

Specialist Subjects: Paediatrics; paediatric gastroenterology; international health; malaria; malnutrition; haemoglobinopathies

Interests

My main interest is in international child health. I have undertaken research in The Gambia, West Africa and Papua New Guinea in malaria, haemoglobinopathies, environmental enteropathy and malnutrition. My current research focuses on probiotics in the prevention of atopy in young infants and antibiotic-associated and C. difficile diarrhoea in elderly in-patients.

I have established a working partnership between Swansea University's School of Medicine and the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU) Health Board and the Medical School and Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in The Gambia.  This link supports a number of educational projects as well as an active medical student exchange programme.

The Ibadan Swansea Partnership with the College of Medicine University of Ibadan, Nigeria, builds the capacity of health professionals working in Africa in developing computer-based learning materials in international health. The partnership also supports a distance-based learning MSc course in Biomedical Education for West Africa.

I am the Overseas Director for Africa for the RCPCH.

I am a co-moderator of CHILD2015.

My clinical work is in paediatric gastroenterology.
