Research Interests 

David is the Director of Health Informatics at the College of Medicine. His research interests are in the field of Health Informatics and he specialises in the secondary use of routinely collected data to support and conduct research. He has been involved in a wide range of large-scale, multi-centre studies of complex interventions and evaluations of policy and service initiatives.

eHealth Industries Innovation Centre

David is the Director of the eHealth Industries Innovation Centre and develops academic and business links within th UK and internationally, and overseeing collaborative research activities within the Centre.

Health Informatics Research Laboratories

David is the University Director of Health Informatics Research Laboratories at Swansea University. The Research Labs have been created through a collaboration between Centre for Health Information, Research and Evaluation (CHIRAL), School of Medicine, Swansea University and Informing Healthcare, the national programme for NHS IT for Wales and provide a state-of-the-art facility to design, prototype, test and evaluate innovative new information technologies for use in improving health and healthcare.

Health Information Research Unit

David is also joint lead of the Health Information Research Unit for Wales (HIRU), a newly established research centre which develops new ways of harnessing the potential of routinely collected information collected in health and other settings. In partnership with many organisations across Wales, HIRU is assembling a large scale, anonymous but linked, population-based data warehouse which uses the School of Medicine’s Blue-C supercomputer as the principal computing infrastructure to support analysis and data modelling.

Professional Awards and Activities

David is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (FRSA); a past Chairman and a current Director of MediWales (formally the Welsh Medical Technology Forum), a membership organisation representing the medical technology sector of Wales.  David is a member of numerous university committees and national bodies relating to health informatics and health-related research. He has received research grants and consultancy contracts valuing over £30m over recent years.
