Swansea University - Before You Apply

Before You Apply

There are many options to consider when deiciding to apply to University. To help you make your choice we have provided some answers to questions that we are frequently asked by prospective students.

How do I apply to study at Swansea?

What qualifications do I need?

How do I find more information about the course?

I would like to visit the University, how can I arrange this?

How much will it cost?

Are there any scholarships or bursaries available?

Can I take a year out before I start my studies/apply for deferred entry?

What qualifications do I need?

You will need GCSE English with a minimum of grade C (or equivalent) for all courses.

Full details of the specific requirements for each course can be found on the course pages. Because the majority of the candidates who apply for undergraduate study at Swansea take qualifications included in the UCAS Tariff, entrance requirements are listed as tariff points (for full details of the UCAS Tariff click here).  Offers will usually range between 240 and 320 tariff points, depending on the course.

However, we welcome applications from candidates offering other qualifications, such as Access courses, HND, International Baccalaureate, etc plus a range of non-UK examinations.

For details of typical offers for holders of the International, European and French Baccalaureates and the German Abitur please click here.

For qualifications from other countries please see our minimum entry requirements.

If your qualifications are not listed on either table, please contact the Admissions Office for further details.

I would like to visit the University, how can I arrange this?

We hold three general University Open Days each year, usually in July, September and October.  For further details and to book a space at one of these Open Days please click here.

All applicants are invited to visit the University after they have formally applied.  This could be either before or after a decision is made.  The Admissions Tutor in your chosen Department or School will write to you direct.

If you are unable to visit on one of the set days, you are also welcome to visit the University independently at any time, as access to the University is not restricted.  However you should first make an appointment with the Admissions Tutor if you want to have a look around the Department and meet with a member of staff.  To download a self-guided tour pack please click the link below:

Can I take a year out before I start my studies/apply for deferred entry?

We are happy to consider applications for deferred entry for the majority of our courses.  The only exceptions are the MBBCH in Medicine and the BMid in Midwifery.  This is because of the intense competition in these areas for a very small number of places.

For all other courses you are welcome to apply via UCAS for a course beginning the following year, or can request deferred entry during the application cycle.
