The University prides itself on a strong and supportive research environment where excellent research, much of it world class, is being carried out. To help with your development the University identifies what you can expect from the Universityfrom your Faculty/School and what we expect from you as a research student. Information is also available in the Guides for Research Students, Research Degree Regulations and Other University Regulations. The University’s student charter summarizes these responsibilities.

All Faculties/Schools require research students to be enrolled at the University and attend an induction session. The University recognises that attendance, training and engagement with teaching and learning is a key element in successful student retention, progression, achievement and employability. This approach serves to identify students who may be experiencing difficulties and might need particular support e.g. from Student Services. The University also has a legal duty to monitor attendance and to act on non-attendance to meet its requirements in reporting attendance to external sponsors, as well as meeting the sponsorship requirements of UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for the monitoring of International students studying in the UK on a Student Route (previously Tier 4) student visa. The Research Management System has been developed for monitoring attendance for these purposes.

Communication with the University is essential and information should be reviewed regularly. Official communication will be delivered to your University email account which should be checked daily. Information regarding fees, laboratory equipment and insurance is available from your college. Every student will have a supervisory team to assist and support them with their studies. There are guidelines for duration of study e.g. full time, part time etc. called candidature. Specific information is available for students who are from outside the EU and for the Student Route (previously Tier 4) Research Students.
