Latest Achievements

Residential Services are pleased to report on the success of the 2016 charity collection campaign.

The campaign which covers the end of term charity collections, as well as other mid-year initiatives, has included generating over 1565 bags for the British Heart Foundation’s “Pack for Good” campaign, saving over 12.5 tonnes from landfill and raising an estimated £22,000 for the charity.

During the 2016 student departure period over 200 bags of food were donated to SYSHP, Swansea Women’s Aid, Port Talbot Women’s Aid and Calan DVS, and over 300 items of bedding were shared between SYSHP, homeless projects in Swansea and the animals at Many Tears Animal Rescue Centre. This has been greatly enhanced through the campaign being extended to residents of the new Bay Campus.

Redundant furniture from the decommissioned houses in HSV was donated to Caer Las and the British Heart Foundation, generating an estimated £20,000 for BHF alone, as well as additional furniture items from Singleton Residences.

We look forward to continuing working with our charity partners in the 2017 collections.

Recycling - New Scheme

GOOD NEWS: Last year our recycling rate improved from 41% to 46% (2014/2015)

TARGET: to achieve 60% recycling by 2017/18. A new segregated recycling scheme is in place for Bay Campus and Singleton Campus in order for us to keep pace with legislation. The University is determined to improve its recycling rates with at-source segregation across the Estate.

FOOD WASTE: For the first time there is now collection of food waste at Swansea University starting in September 2016.  Food waste bins and caddies are in all kitchen areas on Singleton Campus.
