Biosciences at Swansea in TOP TEN for Research Excellence
The results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 show that Biosciences at Swansea are ranked 7th in the UK and TOP in Wales. 93.8% of our research outputs were regarded as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) and Swansea Biosciences had the highest percentage of publications judged ‘world-leading’ in the sector. This is a great achievement for the Department, for the College of Science and indeed for Swansea University.
Professor Rory Wilson, Head of the Department of Biosciences, said “ Swansea Biosciences is simply vibrant with talent and amazing minds. I’m delighted the team has shown some of what it can do. But watch this space. This is just the beginning.“
The measure of our research impact was 80% world-leading or internationally excellent. The highlights include how research by Professor Wilson aided public understanding of long-distance animal movements through the development of a ‘Daily Diary’ tagging device, which subsequently informed the National Geographic’s Great Migrations series; and Professor Tariq Butt’s research in response to growing concerns about health and environmental risks posed by conventional chemical pesticides which resulted in environmentally-friendly alternatives to chemical pesticides.
