If you work or study at the University it is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the emergency evacuation routes, exits and assembly points for the buildings you use. Directional signage is provided to assist you in identifying the escape routes and exits in an emergency situation.

If you have any concerns in relation to fire safety within your building you should report them to your H&S Coordinator.

Do not remove or interfere with any equipment supplied for fire safety. If you notice fire equipment is missing or damaged report it to your H&S Coordinator immediately.

There is an online fire safety awareness training package which is mandatory for all employees and leads you through fire hazards, actions and fire extinguishers.

Fire Prevention is Part of Your Responsibility

If you work or study at the University, fire prevention is part of your responsibility

  • Do not roll up leads. Fully extend coiled extension leads.
  • Make sure leads are not frayed.
  • Do not overload power points.
  • Do not ‘daisy chain’ extension leads.
  • Check electrical appliances for damage before use: cracks, loose parts etc.
  • Smoking is only allowed on campus in designated zones.
  • Make sure cigarettes are extinguished and placed in the bins provided.
  • Highly flammable materials must be clearly identified and stored safely.
  • Ensure all waste is disposed of safely in line with the waste management plan. Do not accumulate large amounts of waste.
  • Take good care to maintain a general clean and safe work environment by keeping areas tidy and removing hazards, such as wires (trip hazard) and paper piles (fire hazard).
  • Never ignore a potential hazard, even if it is not in your work area.
  • Do not wedge open fire doors.

If you smell gas you must:

Many gases are highly flammable and if you smell gas you must:

  • Notify everyone in the area and evacuate the vicinity. Inform Security – ring 333.
  • Do not sound the fire alarm or switch on/off any electrical devices.
  • If it is safe to do so, turn off the source of gas if you can identify it.
